Dussehra is one of the major Hindu festivals. It is celebrated as Shri Ram killed the demon king Ravana after 9 days of fight and freed his wife Devi Sita from the custody of Ravan. On this day, Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasur, and therefore, is celebrated as Vijayadashmi today. People pray and today even Goddess Durga seeks blessings. It is believed that Lord Rama also prayed to Goddess Durga for power and before she gave her wish, Goddess wanted to check her respect for her.
For this, he removed a lotus out of 108 lotus with which he was praying. When Shri Ram reached the end of his prayers and realized that a lotus was missing, he started cutting his eyes (because his eyes represent Kamal and another name for him is Kamalayan) to complete his prayers Goddess was pleased with her devotion to the goddess and gave victory over Ravana.
It is believed that this prayer to Goddess was only a few, was that Sri Ram was able to kill Raavan on the 10th day of the monster and hence this festival is celebrated as a festival throughout India. It symbolizes the victory of good (Ram and Durga) on evil (Ravana and Mahishasura).
Different parts of the country celebrate this festival in different ways. While Dussehra of Kullu is very famous, Dussehra is also very popular in states like West Bengal and Tripura.
