James Rector was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was the grandson of Arkansas Civil War Governor Henry Macy Rector and Mississippi Rebuilding Governor James Alcorne.
He won the silver medal in the 100 meters at the Summer Olympics in the 1908 Summer Olympics, during Olympic qualifying for both qualifying heat and semi-final (10.8 seconds at that time). He lost to the Reggie Walker in the final, running 10.9 seconds, Walker scored 10.8 points for the second time.
Thirty years ago, Rector was a major St. Louis, Missouri lawyer after retiring in Hot Springs
